Wanted to say wow and thanks for those three This Mortal Coil tracks, and I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks parts of that album are overtly dramatic – but those three songs (and 'another day') are really great
and, yes that's Hokusai's 'dream of the fisherman's wife' as my avatar-thing, I don't know why blogger shrank it down so much, I had uploaded a decent sized one – good eyes you have!
and you should check out those Naked City albums, I think you might really like them
hey I do have Big Star's “holocaust”, here it is along with the original “kangaroo”, and one of my favorite Guided By Voices songs – which I thought I'd share since you were (still are?) on a GBV kick – and yeah 'Alien Lanes' is brilliant
about Faye Wong, I think she's great, she played Faye in Wong Kar Wai's Chungking Express, which is probably my favorite movie, her performance is amazing and an inspiration. She's also a famous popstar, supposedly the most famous female vocalist in Asia. But it's her acting mostly, as sparse as that has been, that grabbed me. And I never let go either. There's a great quote from her, that I want to use in a book someday,
"I'm lazy, only manage to jog for 2 days. I smoke, an act of damaging health. I'm a straightforward person, therefore offending someone becomes part of everyday life. I love to throw my temper around, not knowing how to control them. I'm an impatient person; especially to things that does not interest me. I'm confident yet feel inferior, very contradicting. Facing my fans, I'll feel embarrass. I'm not motivated, always thinking of holidays. I'm not an obedient person, even my mum can't change this fact. I'm not an idol, please don't treat me as one. Thanks to all who loves me. Hope that I'll reach my definition of perfection one day; you'll still be proud of me."

I'm not really sure how she's perceived by contemporary Chinese young adults, though friends of mine who are from Hong Kong know who she is but don't seem to think she's too amazing?
About Lucifer Effect/stanford prison exp/ etc – I don't recall being turned off of the book or Zimbardo for the reasons you mentioned, it was just too much to read and I felt like I would benefit from a more general psychology background even though the book was geared toward the general reader – but I can see how what you saw in it would be a turn off. I seem to remember Zimbardo talking a lot about how much remorse he felt for having conducted the experiment, but how he could never change it. His acceptance seemed more realistic than forced or conscious-clearing white wash p.c. mush. But, I could be way off.
That other experiment, the Milgram one is fascinatingly creepy too. I know a little bit about that one. But, I'd like to read more reference type works on it (or see Milgram's films of it) as people often bring that up when I mention the Stanford Prison experiment, and each time some one starts telling me about the Milgram experiment they add new elements, or tell it sometimes dramatically differently than the last person who told me about it. I'll look for 'das experiment', thanks.
Anyway, totally love your blog! And I really enjoyed the mix you posted the other day. What a great Melt Banana track, my favorite from Cellscape is 'If It Is The Deep Sea, I Can See You There '. Do you like that song? It's emotional yearning in a labyrinth, well I can't put it right at the moment, but yeah that song totally caught me off guard when I first heard it.
